This handmade celadon Meiping vase is inspired by one of the most iconic forms in Chinese ceramic history, refined to its peak during the Song Dynasty.

Originally emerging in the Tang Dynasty, the Meiping form was first used as a storage vessel for wine. Archaeological examples, including Tang white-glazed Meiping preserved in the Palace Museum, confirm the early development of its distinctive silhouette—narrow mouth, short neck, full shoulders, and gently tapered body.

By the Song Dynasty, the Meiping became a fully matured form, widely known as a Jingping (storage vessel), used across both official and folk contexts for storing fine wine. Inscriptions found on Cizhou ware, such as “fine wine” and “sea of drunken delight,” directly reflect this function.

During this period, two major stylistic systems emerged:

Northern kilns (such as Cizhou and Ding kilns) produced bold, upright Meiping forms with strong and powerful lines.
Southern kilns (including Jingdezhen, Longquan, and Ou Kiln) developed a more slender, elegant style with softer curves, reflecting the refined aesthetics of southern literati culture.

This Ou Kiln Meiping belongs to the southern celadon tradition. Its silhouette is graceful and balanced, with a smooth transition from shoulder to body and a gently curved profile that embodies the kiln’s signature aesthetic of softness and refinement.

Today, this piece functions beautifully as both a decorative object and a flower vase—ideal for minimalist interiors, tea spaces, or as a statement of traditional Chinese craftsmanship.
